Bike advocates: do not tell people to just "take the lane."
Telling people the safest place to ride their bike is smack in front of impatient drivers behind them is not the way to get more people on bikes.
Building infrastructure that protects them from those drivers is.
The crazy thing is, I don't even ride that much. Between commuting, the school run, and occasional errands, I average <20 miles on my bike a week.
And still, I have motorists threaten my life on a weekly basis.
A year of dangerous passes. AKA a 40 second argument for why we need massive, urgent investment in safe, dedicated facilities for people traveling by bicycle.
Every street for everyone.
Technically, wide outside lanes are considered a bike facility here.
Finally reading that Washington Post article about pedestrian safety and COVID - https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/interactive/2023/pedestrian-safety-covid-pandemic/ if you haven't read it - and I have thoughts.
First I want to give a bigger shout out to @DrTCombs for the "Shifting Streets" dataset.
I think about how much work it was to collect and share this data during lockdown and I'm just in awe.

From now on I insist on being referred to as "Researchers at the University of North Carolina"

Hey #WaPo feel free to check the actual credit page: pedbikeinfo.org/shiftingstreets
Academic adulting achievement unlocked: submitting a manuscript #review *before *receiving a polite reminder from the editor!
Surely I'm suppoed to get a profile badge or something for this, right?
not-so-random pre-emptive reminder that #BodyShaming is hurtful and counterproductive, no matter whose body parts are in question
find another way to mock irrational decisionmaking
Still waiting for a valid argument as to why #NHTSA doesn't regulate motor vehicle size or aftermarket modifications
There's been a small clump of lichen sitting on our bathroom sink for over a week. No one claims to know how it got there. No one seems to mind its presence, either, so I guess it lives there now. Seems happy enough, and strangely fits the decor.
#ChapelHillNC #zoning #racism
1. It's not a waste of money to pay a consultant to help a town dismantle 50-year-old zoning policies designed specifically to reinforce structural racism.
2. It is racist to argue that that money should have been used to resurface a street in an affluent white neighborhood with covenants in place that banned people of color until a generation ago.
Raise your hand if you actually like the potholes on your neighborhood street because you know without them your neighbors will drive even more maniacally.
Just me? Please don't let it just be me.
(context: my town's previous transportation engineer is now in prison. I'm sure most engineers do care about people--and ethics--but this is new territory for us and it's wonderful)
(I'm also a better researcher & educator than I am a proofreader so PLEASE holler at me if I wrote anything nonsensical)
I made a thing (with help from my googly overlords).
I can proudly say that I'm a far better researcher & educator than I am a web designer or self-promoter.
The very beginning of #ShiftingStreets, aka my personal way of coping with the early #pandemic sense of helplessness, which quickly snowballed into the biggest, hardest, most chaotic, most famous, most impactful, and most exciting #research project I've ever undertaken.
I can't believe it's almost been 3 years...and we're still at it.

#TransportPlanning & #MobilityJustice #research. Studying, teaching, learning, tooting about 🚶♀️🚲 🚌 & 🛣️, with occasional outbursts about #dogs, #kids, & #gardening. Searchable on tootfinder. Opinions my own.
Not anti-car, just anti-carbrain. Fare-free transit is good policy. A person, not a data point.
