checked my ridiculous rickety cargobike in for long-deferred maintenance, and they seemed genuinely concerned for my safety and comfort with the amount of bad repair that i am willing to tolerate.

Follow

New:
shifter and cables
front rotor
speed sensor
headset
front hub bearings
rear brake system (likely)
more stuff i've probably forgotten

Refused:
saddle
fenders
kickstand

some of this stuff i could do myself but don't want to, some i could do and think i could live without doing at all... but it's all legit, and I'm happy to cut a check to our great local shop.

BREAKING: Nothing on my bike atm.

EXCLUSIVE: Cargobikes are funner with two brakes and a shifter that can access the full range of gears.

@bikepedantic I'm willing to tolerate a lot of questionable equipment, but the headset and brakes are not on my "it'll probably be fine" list.

@bikepedantic the thought just popped in my head wondering if I could hitch my acoustic bike to my ebike to bike them to the shop for maintenance then ride the acoustic home. Like a bike version of an RV with a car on the back

@femmeUTCD @bikepedantic I’m using a rockymounts HotRod. There’s no way to fasten it directly to the bakfiets so I screwed a plank onto the rear rack and fastened the mount to the plank. Improvised as heck but it really works, turns and all!

@CargoBikeLife @femmeUTCD @bikepedantic do you have a closer shot of the mount area? I've been figuring out the best way to haul my kids 20 and 24" on my GSD. Favorite option so far is strapping them down to a plank on the front rack. Tried towing but had some issues. Looking for inspiration.

@robgalanakis @CargoBikeLife @femmeUTCD @bikepedantic I would worry about having the fork pivot that high. The problem I have with towing a kid's bike (or two) on the xtracycle (with u-tube rails) is when their bike flops over on a turn or bump and the fork/steerer falls backwards. I keep a bungee high on the handlebar to pull it forward, but it needs that flex for grade transitions. Otherwise just capture the front wheel at 3 points with free fork movement, and you're golden.

@robgalanakis @CargoBikeLife @femmeUTCD @bikepedantic if you want to remove the wheel and use a fork mount, that's probably fine lower down, still with the bungee, and making sure it can flex forward to turn uphill. The supercargo needs some foot rail accessories that bolt onto that rear rack (I'm thinking with a backrest) and could act as wheel slots for towing.

@enobacon @CargoBikeLife @femmeUTCD @bikepedantic ok now you have me thinking of another solution. Sometimes I worry though that I have a very high tolerance for "good enough" when loading this bike up and will learn a lesson eventually.

@robgalanakis @femmeUTCD @bikepedantic There you go. The Yuba Supermarché has Yepp compatible screw holes on the top of the rear rack. Drill a few holes in the plank and screw it right on. The rockymount originally only had two screw holes, but the wood is softer than the pickup beds it’s really meant for so I added a third to make it more secure.

@robgalanakis @femmeUTCD @bikepedantic The fork fastener cylinder (grey) is interchangeable so you can adapt to different forks, but the tiny screws that you use to clamp it stuck with are too soft so I changed those out with some better quality ones. For reference I think ultimately this cost about $100 and a couple of hours of work to make acceptable. It’s very likely that there are better solutions out there, but hey this one is mine and it works so I’m happy!

@femmeUTCD I would have thrown my e-brompton in the front like a bike turducken, but it’s on long term loan to my father in law. Planned to take bikeshare home, but no bikes for miles. 77 bus to the rescue!

@femmeUTCD @bikepedantic I do bike towing with some regularity, and it's pretty easy if you have a rear rack and some good straps. LMK if you want a tutorial. A piece of pipe insulation or pool noodle is good too to keep things from getting scratched.
