Curious to know if there's research on the effectiveness of "turning vehicles yield to peds" signs like the one deployed here (simple sign on an overhead wire, no other countermeasures). My search is coming up empty.

Thanks!

@DrTCombs @sofio @BarbChamberlain I’m uncertain of the answer to your question, but you may be interested in recent changes to the highway code in the United Kingdom, particularly rule H2: gov.uk/government/news/the-hig

@DrTCombs @BarbChamberlain I’m not sure if they do much. And infact that could hurt, as drivers could rely on them and think they don’t need to yield when they aren’t present.

I only recommend them for the most dangerous of permissive conflicts

@sofio @BarbChamberlain Thanks, Petru. That's my sense as well - ineffective at best, likely counterproductive in many contexts. It seems to be the go-to here though, I suspect because it's the only countermeasure allowed without moving heaven & earth.
But I can't find any research into its efficacy, or the efficacy of any signage-only safety countermeasures. My hunch is that the stakes are low...signs are cheap and thus not deemed worth analysis.

@DrTCombs @BarbChamberlain a no turn on red sign would be a better use of sign material IMO

@DrTCombs Have you checked the FHWA countermeasures database? It includes the studies that the countermeasure recommendations are based on. highways.dot.gov/safety/proven

@DrTCombs Good question! And likewise re: "turning vehicles yield to bicycles," like this sign on East Market Street, Salinas. You might contact Andrew Easterling or others at City of Salinas (contact info here: bikemonterey.org/advocate-for-) and ask if they have any stats on that.

City of Monterey has similar signs, e.g., "Begin right turn lane, yield to bikes" at the Camino Aguajito and Fremont intersection. (See a photo of that one in our "Tips for commercial drivers and people who bike" post: bikemonterey.org/truck-bus-bic.)
