Last time I was here, I was in a stupor (my wife had died three weeks prior), and so was Metro (no Yellow Line).

Today, smiles and great headways

Realized in the Uber what I forgot to pack, and it’s not terribly important, so hooray trip to headquarters lfg!

Every time I hear someone try to explain how a heat pump works, it sounds like they’ve preceded it with a mammoth bong rip

“It doesn’t pump cold in… it pumps the HEAT OUT!”

My husband and I started e-biking just last July and even though I’m not at my ideal weight and suffer from osteoarthritis we now cycle everyday and even do much of our groceries on two wheels 🚲
I’m sharing this picture to encourage all of you who may once have cycled that whatever your age (I’m 70), weight and physical condition (with few exceptions) you can get back on a bike and actually enjoy the breeze on your face 😃

Randomly crying with gratitude is a thing I regularly do now apparently

Reading about people trying to post to #Twitter, #BlueSky & #Threads along with #Mastodon — and that doesn't sound like fun at all.

I'm so glad I settled on Mastodon as my only social media platform back last December — and have seen no need to revise that strategy. I've had time to focus on Mastodon & build a nice community of familiar folks and ones new to me. I have what I want: a chronological timeline filled with a variety of interesting, engaging stuff — provided by people who support and encourage each other.

Alexandria VA Mayor Justin Wilson is officially in the pantheon. When a former director of the city’s transit service showed up to oppose the Duke Street BRT project (!), Mayor Wilson had receipts. alextimes.com/2023/06/duke-str

The only good news on twitter is that new episodes arrive on Disney+ July 12th!

OMIGOD the progress bar on this photo piece on Alexandria, VA's huge sewer overflow tunnel job. Bravo, WaPo graphics crew.

"The implication of the term suggests an inherent weakness or deficiency on the part of the road user labeled as vulnerable and this may limit consideration of other factors that may have caused their increase in risk exposure, such as the behavior of other road users or poor infrastructure."

A group of protesters is disabling robotaxis by placing cones on their hoods, and I am laughing my ass off.

Autonomous cars are a blight, and it is the private-profit-maximizing opposite of what we need in dense, urban areas (i.e. more pedestrian spaces, fewer cars, more transit).

The energy here is pure chaotic good and I’m loving it.

Edited to update: BlackQueerLife instance now has a properly-set-up channel for receiving money contributions. If you wanted the Fediverse to be more welcoming to Black people, it's one practical way to help :-)

It’s 86-degrees in my apartment, I think I need to admit defeat and find a window AC unit

When i worked in DC, we had maybe 5 intersections with an exclusive ped phase districtwide.

Now I have five within walking distance of my house.

Disproportionately funky grid geometry plays a role, but so does path dependence. They're common here because they've just always been common here.

Show thread

There are just some intersections where an additional 30 seconds of delay in my walking trip is more than paid back by the complete absence of drivers moving anywhere near me or my kid.

Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs) are good, and places should do them...

But exclusive ped phases (widely found here in Eastern MA, rare elsewhere AFAIK) are true all-ages signal ops.

Why don't we talk more about them?
