<columbo voice> there’s just one thing I dont quite understand here…

if he’s *actually* decided to drop out, why are you leaking to Axios, instead of, you know, giving your sitting US President the courtesy of actually announcing it himself? axios.com/2024/07/18/president

@bikepedantic It doesn't sound like a leak. More like listening to what Democratic politicians, pollsters, and donors are actually saying.

@alfredo “Several top Democrats privately tell us the rising pressure of party congressional leaders and close friends will persuade President Biden to decide to drop out of the presidential race, as soon as this weekend.” If they actually believe that, why would they anonymously tell the press?

@bikepedantic To put pressure on Biden without actually confronting him, I think.

@bikepedantic possibly to gauge public perception? Have plausible deniability in the leak and if it flops, it was just a rumor. Also I’m guessing he’s gonna want a clear path forward before stepping back and it doesn’t sound like there is one yet.

@bikepedantic

I don’t see a good option here. I don’t believe Biden can pull off a win at this point. But I’m not confident any other Democrats can do better unless Trump manages to screw up bad enough to lose the evangelical Christian vote.

Whatever happens I wouldn’t be sad to see a Harris/Buttigieg ticket.
