I tend to avoid #NewYearsResolutions, but not this year.
In 2024, I resolve to push back every single time someone uses the term #VRU, or #VulnerableRoadUser.
It's a transportation catchall for "humans not safely ensconsed inside a motor vehicle," and it's lazy, inaccurate, offensive, and counterproductive.
@benfulton human? pedestrian? child? person on a bike? outdoor diner?
we're not a monolith just because we're not currently in a car, but the term suggests otherwise.
@DrTCombs Or perhaps "building" at the rate they seem to get hit😜
@DrTCombs That is an actually term? I guess it sounds a bit better than Person We Don’t Care About 🙄
@linnefaulk it's pervasive.
@DrTCombs @linnefaulk "unarmored meatsack"?
@DrTCombs
There is no place in our society for the term, #vulnerableroaduser
@Streetsweeper and yet there it is, in SO MANY policies, reports, research studies...
@DrTCombs What should they say instead?
