Overheard one of my students complaining to another that " is useless for this course" and have never felt more pleased with myself.

@DrTCombs My mother, who taught English from the 1960s thru the 80s, delighted in designing a test that the Cliffs Notes wouldn't help you with. My favorite question of hers, on Ivanhoe (open book test, 1 hour time limit): "At the point at which someone blows a horn, where are the characters and what are they doing? Fill in this diagram of a castle."

@epicdemiologist @DrTCombs I now want to read Ivanhoe, just in order to make that diagram!

@virtuosew @DrTCombs It was fun for her to grade too, with lots of "Kitchen: Friar Tuck is raiding the refrigerator" and random helicopters added in.

@LRRRonEarth the topics we cover challenge a lot of mainstream narratives about urban policy. so, almost by definition, neither the questions we tackle nor the solutions to them won't show up in an LLM designed to provide a probability-based answers!

@DrTCombs

Ooc: I love the idea that challenging orthodox views in a given field makes the LLMs essentially useless. Sounds like true education! Kudos!
