Making a conscious effort to not just ride the cargobike everywhere

@bikepedantic that's what I do. It's the best bike -- longtails are stable-yet-nimble, and comfortable.

@ridingnowhere it has, as the kids say, been very precisely curated over the years. A few more bits of work need to fully achieve the vision.

@bikepedantic @ridingnowhere time to remove the Yepp and get a trail a bike for longer rides

@bikepedantic @ridingnowhere @peter … 5 months and $600 worth of Velo Orange accessories later… it will be perfect

@Will @bikepedantic @ridingnowhere @peter I put new handlebars (Jones H Loop, as it happens) on my vintage 2000 Cannondale and the simple fact my hands didn’t go numb made it into an almost-perfect multipurpose bike for me. I thought about drop bars, gravel-style, but couldn’t bring myself to do it. I just wish it had disc brakes.

@Will @bikepedantic @ridingnowhere @peter I have the trek 950 of that same vintage and aspirations of upgrades spinning through my head.

@Cavetoad @bikepedantic @ridingnowhere @peter it’s great, except for the stuck seatpost. Hit me with your best methods. I just tried soaking with WD40. Stop me before I get out the hacksaw and boring tools.

@Cavetoad @bikepedantic @ridingnowhere @peter Had to take the bike halfway apart, cranks + BB out to soak WD40 & frame saver, treated a bit of minor interior rust. Seat off, tube into my vice between some wood blocks. I twisted, cracked one wood block, nothing budged. Spotted the can of Power Blaster spray, released 1/2 can targeted to the seat post to shrink it microscopically, twisted like hell & got a 30 degree turn! Was able to work it out from there.

@Cavetoad @bikepedantic @ridingnowhere @peter riding high from this & with my tools all out, I decided to fix my son’s Trek 800 bottom bracket, which was wobbly. Huge pain the ass by comparison. The 930 had a sealed cartridge BB, but the 800 had a loose spindle & ball bearing one. Got everything almost apart, but you need 3 different tools to remove the lock ring + races from that style of BB, I had one tool, kludged the other (smashed my fingers doing it)…

@Cavetoad @bikepedantic @ridingnowhere @peter … and got totally messy with machine oil / grease, only to find the problem with the wobble are there are two plastic inserts that the spindle actually sits on, & one had half worn away in the 30 yrs this bike has existed. Fucking load bearing plastic insert, which of course I don’t have. I’m about ready to order a square taper cartridge but I’m sort of intrigued by the challenge of a cheaper & proper repair.

@Cavetoad @bikepedantic @ridingnowhere @peter but the cool thing about both these bikes is I’m sure I’m the first person to take these apart in their 30 year lifespan, and in both cases, basic mechanic tricks let you fix any problems or replace any parts. Everything is standard components available for cheap locally or online, and thus these bikes are near indestructible if not abused.either one could last my 9 and 11y/o through high school. #Cycling

@Will @Cavetoad @bikepedantic @peter

This is fascinating, and definitely reassures me that I am doing the right thing by utilizing our local bike shops for most repairs.
If I attempted any of these repairs I'd set the bike on fire somehow

@ridingnowhere @Cavetoad @bikepedantic @peter I have a cartridge BB and pin spanner, and pedal wrench on order headed my way. See, the thing is, for what I’d pay a shop to fix this, I can get all the parts and tools, and burn several hours of my own time getting frustrated with it not once, but multiple times over future years.

@Will @ridingnowhere @Cavetoad @bikepedantic @peter I took a Park Tool School intro series a number of years ago at a LBS and decided to just continue outsourcing.

@nikkid @ridingnowhere @Cavetoad @bikepedantic @peter pedal wrench is pretty good, no complaints, and still any girls who want to use it, come on by. I was able to swap son’s spindle BB for a cartridge one, and even taught him a little about bike repair. All in all, I’m pretty happy with this series of tool purchases and repairs.
