i desperately wish non-academia sabbaticals were a thing

@jeffluszcz @bikepedantic Google used to have one at 10 years. They got rid of it because it turned out most people took the sabbatical, then came back to Google and quit.

@crschmidt @jeffluszcz oof. Honestly, in a cutthroat tech context, I’d be afraid to leave for an extended period, and inadvertently demonstrate how things function well without me.

@bikepedantic @crschmidt @jeffluszcz a lot of Google is amazingly collegial and not at all cutthroat. Taking six months or a year off (assuming you don’t get laid off) isn’t a particularly big deal and mostly people will yell at you if you check in while on leave. (As we do when people on baby leave of some sort pop in to check on stuff)

@crschmidt @jeffluszcz @bikepedantic well, damn, now I’m annoyed. Ah, well, too damn much vacation time is almost as good as a sabbatical. (Plus who knows, maybe I’ll get lucky and be laid off, that’d actually be an awesome cap to this outing)
