That thing where homeowners take up torches and pitchforks over property tax increases that, taken alone, would amount to very minor and highly reasonable rent increases in the same market.

@bikepedantic When you sign the deed to your home you are presented with a list of red herrings to use for any situation.

@DrTCombs can’t spell ‘entitlement’ without ‘title’ (or ‘men’)

@bikepedantic I look at my property tax bill and it seems like I’m getting a good deal for that money.

@wegonnaseeno me too. and in one of the most regressive policies i've ever heard of, i get a substantial discount on my property tax here in cambridge because i'm an owner-occupant, which is how we choose to spend part of our biotech property-tax bounty!

@bikepedantic and even better, property taxes actually go to useful shit like water and sidewalks and schools rather than lining some landlord’s pocket

@bikepedantic We have an especially dumb form of that in BC. Municipal taxes are determined by a %age of property appraisal. Crucially, the amount of tax you pay is more or less fixed, but the %age can change when new appraisals come out every year. So every year you have swales of people complaining about high appraisals meaning their property taxes will be high which just isn’t true. If everyone’s house goes up in value, the mill rate just decreases.
