When you hand a carpenter a safety-oversight hammer, anything that moves is a nail. If too many things are moving, your carpentry skills are questioned. (ht @streetsblogmass & @cmilneil ) mass.streetsblog.org/2023/03/0

@bikepedantic
Hmmmm can anyone think of another form of surface transportation that might also crash and cause loss of life and thus maybe should be limited to 25mph?
Nah, me either. I guess it's just trains.

@bikepedantic tbf, if there's truth to this reddit comment, I do understand the idea of "What the fuck, your entire set of maintenance records is a lie, there is no sensible way to operate in that environment." Not gonna say I know exactly what the solution should be, but if true, it's the kind of thing that the T brought on itself.

@crschmidt absolutely. There’s a line where safety oversight and intervention is called for, and that sounds like a pretty concerning situation

@crschmidt system is a mess this morning I will have very little patience with an admin I elected specifically to fix.

@dr2chase @bikepedantic Not particularly, because the direct/short-term impact of emissions non-compliance is very different than of train derailment.

It's hard to know so far how much of an overreaction this is (and it's possible we won't at all, if they don't actually tell the full truth here). It's possible it's an extreme overreaction; but also possible it's not.

@crschmidt @bikepedantic I think it is rather that if one can obfuscate the connection between (in)action and death enough, then it effectively doesn't matter, no matter what statisticians may so.

@dr2chase @bikepedantic The speed limit on the red line, orange line, and blue line has been lifted as of this morning, with additional inspection work on the green line and Mattapan line in order to restore them to service as quickly as possible.

So, insofar as it applied for < 24 hours to the majority of trips, I'd say "No, it is not like the VW debacle."

@crschmidt @bikepedantic Ooof, yeah if that's true then that might actually be enough to convince me the speed limit is (temporarily) necessary
