@bikepedantic please absolutely feel free to highlight Australian steals if you see them

The book 'Why Travel?' (Niblett and Beuret, Eds, Bristol University Press) proposes that the need and desire to travel is a fundamental human characteristic 'hard-wired' into us by evolution and history. Some have interpreted this as implying that any attempt to reduce travel runs against our inherent humanity and is bound to fail. But the evidence is ambiguous, the argument partial, and the conclusion flawed. My critical LTT article free to view at tapas.network/28/goodwin.php

@ckent Ended up doing the Melbourne XPT and overnight bus due to time/day constraints. If the Overland ran every day (and preferably also at nights) I could have made things more comfortable.

The Indian Pacific is very attractive... but $800+ each way for a weekend trip is beyond me!

At least the bus station is better located than that Parklands Terminal, I didn't know about that. You'd think ~1 train per day could be handled at the main station.

@damovisa Closely related thing I'm currently reading an example of: academic papers (almost always from the US) that don't state what country their data comes from.

So that would be the Southeast... of where? The National Labor Survey of where?

I understand the urge to write abstracts with grand sweeping statements as if your results apply to all countries at all times, but to not even bury one single mention of your country in your methods, a single line in your discussion... too far.

@damovisa this is a little hill I love to die on too, mostly on rockclimbing forums (no, we're not all 'stuck in the gym because it's winter')

I've been informed that it's no longer Summer (what is time anyway?), but the weather isn't feeling at all Autumnal. In the #Dharawal weather calendar, we're still in the hot and dry season 'Burran' here in #Sydney. Things that have been said about cars before but I feel like saying them again

And it’s a shame if it continues perceptions of car dominance, because parts of Adelaide are great to cycle!

Here we are heading in to the Fringe Festival through the parklands 🥰🥰

(it’s pretty ridiculous to have to wear helmets for something you can do wearing a summer dress, carrying a handbag, and in my sister’s case, heavily pregnant. But that’s another post).

How the sheer size of cars makes them seem more important than they are.

I’m visiting my sister in Adelaide and riding on many quiet streets like this. Often there are also other people on bikes, like that guy up ahead. Take the parked cars out of this streetscape and it’s ‘wow, everyone cycles in Adelaide’. But with them, they dominate the image of the street, even though there’s only 4 of them and 3 of us…

@humantransit I really really want these in Sydney. But would prefer much larger 'time to next bus' displays. I like the idea that a large '2 minutes to next bus, 7 minutes to the one after' sign, readable by drivers and pedestrians, serves as a form of advertising for the convenience of the bus network, which is often mysterious to non-busriders even in cities where it's quite good.

@haraldkliems That was great. Partly answered something I always wonder about (many people mention having had their bike stolen; few mention having bought a stolen bike. Where do they go?)

Definitely seems worth getting one of those GPS trackers since hardly any of them were noticed and removed.

‘Fun’ fact: long distance train travel times haven’t improved in Australia since the 1970s.

Still enjoyed my train to Melbourne, the bus a bit less so, but it would have so much more appeal to more people if, say, Sydney to Adelaide was 12 hours total travelling instead of 21 (+2 hour connection in Melbourne).

@timrichards one can hope! I wonder if the day or night bus service is more popular. It’s about 80% full tonight.

I think Firefly probably appreciate that a consistent daily schedule is easier to plan around, and benefits their ridership in the long run vs like, cutting Tuesday night service because it’s always empty.

@timrichards I’m taking the night bus. I figured I’m an ok sleeper so might as well save some money vs going XPT sleeper and Overland (also the Overland days were a bit restrictive).

@ckent @jakecoppinger nice! There are a few surprising good routes in this city…

Yeah I believe part of the new plan for development over the train lines at Central is to reconnect the two ends of George St for walking and cycling. The current plans aren’t great overall but at least have that link.

Starting the slow trip to Adelaide!

Booked a day train and first class hoping to get some work done, but forgot these trains are too old to have power at the seats… hopefully can find some somewhere.

@jakecoppinger Wow, nearly all the previous changes are yours too. I don't realise how few people are doing all the work.

I think it's right now. As far as signage, I found this little sign at the south end on google. From the north (from the new path through the park) there is no signage or markings either way that I can find.
